COVID-19 [Novel coronavirus, 2019-nCoV]

As of today 17 February 2020, the number of recorded cases of this virus has exceeded 71,000 and the number of deaths beyond 1,700 (a little over 2%). As so many resources are publishing their immediate understanding of the outbreak and the media is in a frenzy of fear mongering, I figured I might as well get my two-bits worth into the midst of the chaos.

The images of care- and lab-workers walking around in “space suits” and maintenance workers spraying buses and transports with disinfectants(?) only feeds the frenzy and fear. What to do? What to do? Oh my! Oh my! As practitioners utilizing energetic and biological methods for both assessment and healing, it is clear there must be another way. I know your time is limited to research and study this phenomenon and you are already busy facing the usual cold and flu seasons. I’ve taken the liberty of compiling some of the research and information for you and hope that this overview will provide you with a plan-of-attack for this year’s outbreaks. My personal comments and suggestions are notated or are limited to the conclusions at the end of this article. CLW

Health Alert Release

“According to the World Health Organization, which has declared COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern. It is like any other respiratory illness and can cause mild symptoms such as a runny rose, sore throat, cough and a fever. But in serious cases, it can cause pneumonia, as well as breathing problems. “More rarely, the disease can be fatal,” the UN health agency said. On average, the patients spent 10 days in hospital.
As there are currently no drugs available to treat the new bug, healthcare workers must simply manage a patient’s symptoms. Of the patients whose conditions were severe enough to require treatment in an intensive care unit (ICU), most were older men (aged 66 on average) and were more likely to have underlying conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and cerebrovascular disease, which affects the blood vessels. This suggests that age and comorbidity may be risk factors for a poor outcome.”[Source unknown]

Suspected animal source of COVID-19:

Possible route of transmission from bat or bat subspecies – However bats are rare in markets in China but are hunted and sold directly to restaurants for food.
Possible route of transmission from pangolins – Usually kept live in markets for use in traditional Chinese medicines. Entire species is considered endangered.
Both species appear to harbor versions of this virus.[livescience.com; medicalnewstoday.com; BBC.com]

Conspiracy Theories

The latest conspiracy theories about the new coronavirus, which first led to an outbreak in Wuhan, China in late 2019, allege that the virus is man-made, rather than the natural result of people coming in contact with wild animals.
A number of websites shared information claiming to have identified short HIV “insertions” and [that the virus] showed signs of being created in a lab. However there appears to be no evidence that the new virus was bioengineered, and every indication it came from an animal.
Numerous research organizations have questioned the validity of those claims with Kristian Andersen from the Scripps Research Translational Institute advising: “Had the authors compared nCoV to related bat viruses (and not just SARS as they did), they would have realized that the peptides are also present in the bat viruses – and most certainly don’t come from HIV.”[factcheck.org]

Orthodox Treatment Possibilities

“There are currently no targeted, specialized treatments for infections resulting from the new coronavirus. When doctors detect a 2019-nCoV infection, they aim to treat the symptoms as they arise.” [Medical News Today] Most sources state quite clearly that: “No antiviral treatment for coronavirus infection has been proven to be effective.” [natap.org]

Current treatment is supportive care which treats the symptoms such as fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhea and fatigue, but does not treat the virus itself. [healthline.com] “Treating the disease means lessening the symptoms by providing respiratory support, lowering the fever and making sure people are hydrated, among other things.
Stephen Morse, a professor at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health states there are relatively few effective antiviral medications. “This is especially true for the RNA viruses – like 2019-nCov and HIV – which use RNA rather than DNA as their genetic material.”
Related coronavirus respiratory illnesses were seen in 2002 with SARS and 2012 with MERS. Eight years later there is still no effective treatment for MERS.
It has been suggested that like HIV, a cocktail of drugs – rather than a single drug – may be effective for the new coronavirus. China has apparently “repurposed” the AbbVie HIV drug for application with the new coronavirus. It is usually used to treat HIV patients and belongs to a class of drugs known as protease inhibitors, which block a key enzyme that helps viruses replicate. As 2019-nCoV is an emerging virus, an effective treatment has not been developed for disease resulting from this virus.”
“In fact, none of the handful of coronaviruses known to infect humans has an approved treatment, and people who are infected typically receive care mainly to help relieve symptoms according to the CDC. However, a handful of repurposed drugs, from drugs targeting Ebola and malaria to HIV have already shown promise according to new findings.”[livesciene.com]

One source reports: “patients with the new coronavirus in Thailand improved within 48 hours of receiving the HIV treatment in conjunction with a flu medication (Tamiflu).” [Natap.org]

Of interest from a BBC report:

Even if it can be diagnosed quickly, finding an effective treatment for a virus like this is famously difficult.
The main way of treating a viral infection is to find small molecules that prevent the virus from replicating inside our cells. These “antivirals” interfere with the virus’s ability to enter our cells, disrupts its ability to hijack our cellular machinery to replicate, or prevents it from escaping infected cells.
Unfortunately, there are not many effective antiviral drugs for coronaviruses. One potential treatment for 2019-nCoV is an antiviral treatment initially developed to combat the Ebola virus. It was given to the first patient in the US with the new coronavirus, who went on to recover within days. Doctors who treated him say they cannot be sure the drug, called remdesivir, was responsible for his recovery, but other research has shown it is effective against MERS in coronavirus mice. The drug is known as a broad-spectrum antiviral, meaning it can block the ability of a number of viruses from making copies of themselves.

[So, in the end none of these researchers have any idea what they are doing or how to treat the previous coronaviruses SARS or MERS all these years later – let alone this latest version that emerged in late 2019 and is now called COVID-19. CLW]

Symptoms

  1. Runny nose, headache, cough, sore throat, fever, difficulty breathing
  2. Mild to severe flu-like symptoms
  3. Respiratory infection
  4. For a subset of individuals, including those with cardiopulmonary disease or a weakened immune system, the viral infection can progress to a more severe lower-respiratory infections such as pneumonia or bronchitis.
  5. About 20% progress to more severe disease, including pneumonia and respiratory failure
  6. In some cases, death

Alternative Treatment Possibilities:

For prevention start with all the old avoidance standbys:

  1. Wash your hands, wash your hands, wash your hands!
  2. Keep your hands away from you face
  3. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing
  4. Face masks (and keep your hands off of it!)
  5. Thoroughly cook eggs and meat / eat a balanced diet
  6. Drink plenty of fluids
  7. Get enough sleep
  8. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness
  9. And so on . . .

Antiviral Developed Using Sugar

An international team of researchers has created a new antiviral material, essentially made from sugar, that is able to “destroy viruses on contact and may help in the fight against viral outbreaks.”
The scientists, from The University of Manchester, the University of Geneva (UNIGE) and the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland, say that the treatment shows promise in treating herpes simplex, respiratory syncytial virus, hepatitis C, HIV, and Zika virus – to name a few. Follow this link to sugar for more details.[pharmatimes.com; Manchester.ac.uk; phys.org]

Vitamin C Treatment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, Feb 2, 2020

Hospital-based Intravenous Vitamin C Treatment
for Coronavirus and Related Illnesses
by Andrew W. Saul and Atsuo Yanagisawa, MD, PhD

(OMNS February 2, 2020) No matter which hospital a coronavirus patient may seek help from, the question is: Will they be able to leave walking out the front door, or end up being wheeled out the basement backdoor? Prompt administration of intravenous vitamin C, in high doses, can make the difference.
Abundant clinical evidence confirms vitamin C’s effectiveness when used in sufficient quantity.
Physicians have demonstrated the powerful antiviral action of vitamin C for decades.

Specific instructions for intravenous vitamin C

The Japanese College of Intravenous Therapy (JCIT) recommends intravenous vitamin C (IVC) 12.5/25g (12,500 – 25,000 mg) for acute viral infections (influenza, herpes zoster, common cold, rubella, mumps, etc.) and virus mimetic infections (idiopathic sudden hearing loss, Bell’s palsy). In adults, IVC 12.5g is given for early stage illness with mild symptoms, and IVC 25g for moderate to severe symptoms. IVC is usually administered once or twice a day for 2-5 continuous days, along with or without general treatments for viral infections.

Patients with acute viral infections show a depletion of vitamin C and increasing free radicals and cellular dysfunction. Such patients should be treated with vitamin C, oral or IV, for neutralizing free radicals throughout the body and inside cells, maintaining physiological functions, and enhancing natural healing. If patients progress to sepsis, vitamin C should be added intravenously as soon as possible along with conventional therapy for sepsis.

Waiting for a Vaccine?

“We have set up a situation where a fear is created, and then we try to create the treatment for this fear. The public gets the idea that the flu is going to kill them and the vaccine will save them. Neither is true.” (Marc Siegel, MD, author of False Alarm: The truth About the Epidemic of Fear)

Robert F. Cathcart: “All this talk about a vaccine is too late; a waste of time now, especially when we know how to cure the disease already. Every flu I have seen so far (since 1970) has been cured or ameliorated by massive doses of ascorbate. All of these diseases kill by way of free radicals. These free radicals are easily eliminated by massive doses of ascorbate. This is a matter of chemistry, not medicine. The time has come to stop hiding our ability to treat these acute infectious diseases with massive doses of ascorbate.”

Also discussed as adjunct therapy absolutely essential for fighting viruses:

  • Nebulized hydrogen peroxide
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin D3
  • Zinc
  • Selenium
  • B Complex vitamins and Vitamin A

Homeopathy

[Here I have put together a series of quotes and comments FYI. CLW]

Recently the AYUSH [Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Homeopathy] Government Ministry in India told the public that (while we wait for a vaccine) in addition to the usual hygienic practices, each individual should take on an empty stomach one dose of the homeopathic solution Arsenicum album 30 each day for three days. Then in a month, if the outbreak still poses a threat, repeat. [sciencealert, com]

[This announcement brought an immediate storm of laughter, ridicule and derision – virtually worldwide. The disrespect for these methods and this advice in light of the dismal and dubious orthodox treatment methods outlined above is very typical, but still seems just a bit confusing. What possible harm could be done with this approach? And therefore, why dismiss it so offhandedly? CLW]

“Medical historians tend to overlook the full history of the 1918 influenza epidemic. Records indicate that death rates for those receiving homeopathic treatment were significantly lower than those using the conventional therapy of the time (mostly aspirin). One report noted that there was a 1.05 percent mortality rate in 26,795 cases of influenza treated by homeopathic physicians compared to an average death rate of 30 percent for cases treated by regular doctors of the time.”

[Dr. Larry Malerba, Huff Post; W.A. Dewey, M.D., University of Michigan, Homeopathy in Influenza – A Chorus of Fifty in Harmony, Journal of the American Institute of Homeopathy, May 1921]

Standard homeopathic recommendations for the “common” cold and flu. I quote directly from Dr. Lee Kayne, at britishhomeopathy.org

General Symptoms [for application]:

  • Aconite: First signs especially after a chill, thirsty, possibly anxious
  • Belladonna: Sudden onset, high fever; hot, red, throbbing headache, sensitive to light, noise
  • Natrum mur: Streaming nose (possibly eyes too), sneezing, clear discharge often thicker after 24-48 hours, prefers to suffer alone and shuns sympathy
  • Nux vomica: Headache, pains all over, irritable, nauseous (also good for a hangover!). Nose congested with little discharge, chilly – cannot get warm, even in bed.
  • Gelsemium: Established symptoms, headache, shivers, fatigue, aches and pains, alternating hot and cold, sore nose, very sleepy.
  • Eupatorium perf: Very thirsty, sore muscles/bones, headache, worse on movement
  • Arsenicum iod: Fever, catarrh, burning nasal discharge, sneezing
  • Ferrum phos: Slow onset, mild fever, worse at night, better for cold, nosebleeds.
  • Pulsatilla: Catarrh in nose with thick discharge, ears feel blocked, worse at night, better in fresh air and with attention from loved ones.
  • Bryonia: Dry painful cough, worse at night, thirsty – often most effective as a Linctus.
  • Influenzinum / Bacillinum: A specialized combination remedy for the prevention and treatment of colds and flu. Often prescribed by homeopathic doctors for at risk patients.
  • Oscillocococcinum: Prevention and treatment of colds

Simple Remedies:

  • Peppermint & Eucalyptus: Aroma therapy to clear the head, unblock the nose and ease muscular aches and pains
  • Tea tree oil: Intrinsic anti-viral properties and boost immunity
  • Lavender oil: Ease headaches, muscle aches and pains and sooth chesty coughs

Home remedies

“Even so much as mention a runny nose or sore throat within earshot of my grandma and she’ll promptly whip up a batch (or seven) of her famous chicken soup! If we consider some of the key ingredients, we begin to realise that the use of this traditional remedy actually has some basis in fact. It has a high salt content and, as we know, gargling with salted water helps to destroy bacteria and ease symptoms of a sore throat. Onions and garlic (the Allium remedies in homeopathy) are also excellent for colds.

While in the kitchen, ensure your cupboard is well stocked with honey to coat a dry, scratchy throat, lemon and other citrus fruits for their vitamin C and antioxidant properties and cinnamon for its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Tea prepared with these ingredients (or a “hot toddy” containing one other important Scottish ingredient) is very soothing and helps to promote a good night’s sleep. Perhaps Grandma really does know best after all!”

Lee Kayne PhD MRPharmS DFHom(Pharm) is a community pharmacist in Glasgow.
End of quotes from britishhomeopathy.org.

The Health Information Library at peacehealth.org adds:

  • Bryonia alba: Relieves high fever, bone pains and body aches
  • Rhus toxicodendron: Relieves fever with restlessness
  • Apis mellifica: Help for dry fever that alternates with seating, facial flushing, and very sore throat with swollen tonsils.
  • Phosphorus: Needed during flue, the person has a fever with an easily-flushing face and feels very weak and dizzy. Headache, hoarseness, sore throat and cough are likely. Strong thirst, vomiting liquids up.
  • Sulphur: For long lasting flu after neglect

And . . .

Herbal tinctures

  • Echinacea
  • Siberian Ginseng
  • BaptisiaTintoria

Supplements [Note the critically important addition of iodine here!]:

  • Vitamin A 5000 iu daily
  • Vitamin C 3000 mg daily
  • Vitamin D3 2000 iu daily
  • Iodine 300 ug daily

[homeopathycapetown.co.za]

Conclusions:

In my humble but personal opinion our most effective approach to this and any other virus, must be a combination of methods – methods which follow the old KISS principle:

  1. High doses of Vitamin C plus appropriate supplementation as early as possible
  2. We need to use point and “medication” (I guess now we need to call it “substance”) testing to determine:
    • Which remedy(-ies) to use
    • Dosage
    • Effectivity
  1. Homeopathy – especially including remedies such as Oscillococcinum from Boiron and the influenzinum nosodes either in the old glass ampules or current digital programs.

If we are waiting for a vaccine or complex combination of drugs or magical elixir, we are too late and have missed the point totally. Eight years after the emergence of MERS and seventeen years after SARS, the orthodox or so-called scientific approach has still not worked – period. Laboratory created chemistry and “cocktail pharmaceutical drugs” are not the answer in this circumstance. Rumors of a nutraceutical cocktail are unconfirmed at this time.

Added final quote:

In total, the CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died. That’s fairly on par with a typical season, and well below the CDC’s 2017-2018 estimates of 48.8 million illnesses, 959,000 hospitalizations and 79,400 deaths.Jun 20, 2019. This is about 0.001% success that they attribute to vaccinations
