(20 April 1941* – 18 April 2016†)
Although those who knew him were prepared for it, nevertheless it grieved everybody deeply when they found out about the death of the important scientist Hartmut Heine who was recalled from this world during the night of the 17th into the 18th of April 2016 only two days before the completion of his 75th year.
As a student he plunged with full enthusiasm into the study of anatomy and also minors in physiology, biochemistry, zoology and pathology. By 1974 he was awarded the famous “Senckenberg Prize” from the city of Frankfurt. Every physician who has worked in emergency service applies the treatments of circulatory shock which go back to Heine’s research in those years.
In 1976 he was appointed into the Institute for Anatomy in Wurzburg and the author of these lines [Dr. Kuhnke] was his student in the fields of Histology and Embryology.
Following several years at the free University in Witten-Herdecke as the head of the Institute for Anatomy and Clinical Morphology, the unquestionably most effective and spectacular high point of his achievements was his representation of the anatomical construction of the acupuncture points – a publication which introduced great honor for him at home and abroad and decisively contributed to the recognition of acupuncture within the whole of medicine. [Dr. Walter Sturm of OIRF made our first contacts with Prof. Heine during this time in late 1970’s.]
In the beginning of the 1980’s his revision of the work of Dr. Alfred Pischinger was published in supplemental form. In 1991 however he went his own way with the publication of the famous title “Lehrbuch der biologischen Medizin” which has become the standard basic work of regulation medicine (published in German, Italian and Russian).
Prof. Heine was part of the foundation of the European Council of Doctors for Plurality in Medicine, a committee which he directed for 10 long years.
Since 2001 his main research focus was tissue acidosis and its influence on tissue aging and tumor origin for which perceptions he received the “Matrix Research Award” in 2005.
The list of honors and honorary memberships in numerous national and international societies is long and testifies to the esteem held for him everywhere.
After a serious illness in 2011 he succeeded in stabilizing his health and again devoted himself to his research, and even spoke and inspired his listeners in Baden-Baden, at home and abroad and continued publishing within CO’Med – altogether more than 500 publications carry his name.
His last very worthwhile reading books dealt with a range of topics on the “heart” and “ageing”. Although all on scientific content, they were however more than only compilations of technical knowledge. Here the knowledgeable and educated scholar showed himself as a truth-seeking researcher. Dr. Kuhnke stressed at this point, that his devoted wife Elke played a big part in the origin of these books [and was the acknowledged co-author] and he added the remark that the phrase “behind every important man stands a strong woman” particularly applied to them!
Hartmut Heine loved the precision of knowledge acquirement, often contradicted the current doctrines and present opinions – in particular in Medicine, therefore he often said: “Medicine IS not science, but IT NEEDS science”, and yes in some moments he considered besides that qualification even more than this: EDUCATION.
His humanistic position and his high demands on himself and others – his characteristic features – were incorruptible which became clear over and over again in many personal conversations. Therefore he certainly not only had friends in a circle of scientific “celebrities” and “parvenus” but he thus maintained a truly comprehensive and clear view of the world around us.
With Hartmut Heine we have all lost an important friend and sponsor of medicine (and not only the “complementary procedures”) – but he has left us a rich inheritance which we can possess and which newcomers can always achieve.

I have paraphrased and abridged many of Dr. Kuhnke’s remarks from his CO’Med article, but I could not have written anything more respectful or clear. Prof. Dr. Heine spoke to several of our OIRF tour groups, even once briefly during that awful year of illness in 2011. He also visited Vancouver many years ago (mid-1980’s) to lecture at one of our OIRF conferences. At OIRF we remember Prof. Heine with the utmost professional respect. But, he and his wife Elke have also been friends and longtime acquaintances. We send her our prayers and heartfelt sympathy during this time of grief and loss.
Prof. Dr. Hartmut Heine will be greatly missed and his passing once again represents the changing of an era of research and publication for Complementary and Biological Medicine. The torch has been passed to us. May he now rest and be content that each of us in our own way will honor him and continue his work into the future.
